Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed concern over U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to delay the implementation of new sanctions against Russia, cautioning that this move could potentially escalate the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Zelenskyy emphasized that maintaining economic pressure on Moscow is crucial to international efforts aimed at resolving the war.
The proposed sanctions, which have been paused for 60 days to evaluate their economic impact, target Russia’s energy sector, financial institutions, and oil transportation networks. The legislation also suggests imposing tariffs of up to 100% on nations importing Russian oil, including China and India. Zelenskyy has urged the U.S. to continue exerting pressure on Russia and called on European countries to increase their diplomatic involvement to support Ukraine.
Despite the pause in sanctions, Russia has persisted in its attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, raising alarms about possible electricity shortages as winter approaches. In response, Zelenskyy has appealed for more international aid to bolster Ukraine’s air defense capabilities and protect civilians from these attacks.
Additionally, Zelenskyy has voiced concerns regarding restrictions on Starlink satellite internet services, which are used by Ukrainian forces. He warned that any disruptions could impact military operations, further complicating Ukraine’s defense efforts.
The divergence in approaches highlights ongoing differences between Washington and Kyiv over the strategy to end the war, with Zelenskyy advocating for sustained economic and military pressure on Russia as vital to achieving a lasting peace.
