US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff has called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to resume trilateral peace talks involving the United States, Russia, and Ukraine, as part of Washington’s efforts to end the ongoing conflict. The appeal was made during Witkoff’s recent meeting with Putin in St. Petersburg, where they discussed new proposals and potential steps toward a negotiated settlement. This marked Witkoff’s ninth face-to-face meeting with the Russian leader.
During the discussions, Putin expressed openness to collaborating with US President Donald Trump on other international issues, such as Iran’s nuclear program, and mentioned the possibility of a future meeting between himself, Trump, and potentially Chinese President Xi Jinping in China. The talks came after Witkoff’s meeting in Oslo with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, alongside leaders from Finland and Norway, as well as representatives from Europe and NATO. These discussions aimed to develop a coordinated approach to negotiations with Russia and to identify possible elements of a comprehensive peace agreement.
Key topics reportedly addressed during these diplomatic efforts included security guarantees for Ukraine, the postwar economic recovery, and the future of European security arrangements. Zelenskyy has expressed hope for a trilateral meeting with Trump and Putin to tackle the primary obstacles to ending the war. However, the Kremlin insists that any direct encounter between Putin and Zelenskyy would necessitate significant preparation to ensure it yields meaningful progress.
The renewed diplomatic engagements by Washington underscore its attempts to bring the parties back to the negotiating table, although significant hurdles remain in reaching an agreement acceptable to all involved. The complex nature of the issues at hand, including differing national interests and security concerns, continue to challenge the path to a peaceful resolution.
