Amazon’s Ring is set to launch its Neighbours community app in the UK on October 21, aiming to provide a platform for sharing local safety information and community updates. The app, already available in the United States, has faced scrutiny over privacy issues, particularly regarding police access to Ring camera footage. In the UK, some of these features will be withheld at launch, reflecting ongoing privacy concerns.
The Neighbours app will be integrated into the existing Ring platform, allowing users to participate without owning a Ring device. It is designed to offer a more focused alternative to larger neighborhood groups on platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook. Users can select a community radius between 0.1 and five miles to receive relevant updates. Posts are categorized and reviewed by artificial intelligence and human moderators to ensure compliance with guidelines against illegal content and discrimination.
While certain features available in the US, such as posts from organizations like fire departments and police requests for camera footage, are absent from the UK version, Ring is considering introducing these at a later date. The company has been proactive in addressing privacy concerns, having introduced measures that aim to give users more control over their recordings.
In addition to safety updates, the UK launch will feature Search Party for Dogs, enabling users to report missing pets with photos and details. Owners of Ring cameras with eligible cloud subscriptions can opt to receive alerts if their devices detect a missing dog and can choose to share footage with the pet’s owner.
Acquired by Amazon in 2018, Ring has been expanding its smart-home security offerings while navigating privacy challenges. Recently, Ring implemented a default encryption system called TAKE, designed to protect camera recordings with time-limited keys, further enhancing user control over footage access.
