President Donald Trump has voiced concerns that the ceasefire with Iran is nearing collapse, describing it as being on “life support.” In response to the escalating tension, he is contemplating the resumption of U.S. Navy military escorts for ships navigating the strategic Strait of Hormuz, aiming to counter Iran’s blockade of this crucial maritime route. Trump’s remarks follow his outright rejection of Iran’s recent peace proposals, dismissing them as senseless, and asserting that he faces no internal pressure to forge an agreement.

Since the ceasefire’s inception on April 7, Trump has been critical of Iran’s communications, labeling them a “piece of garbage” that he could not even finish reading. He likened the current state of the ceasefire to a dire medical prognosis, suggesting a mere “1% chance of living.” This follows the U.S.’s delivery of a set of conditions to Iran aimed at de-escalating the conflict, primarily focused on curbing Tehran’s nuclear ambitions. Iran’s counter-proposals over the weekend were promptly dismissed by Trump.

Previously, Trump halted “Project Freedom,” a plan intended to escort oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, after just a few days in an effort to give Iran time to consider his peace proposals. This initiative faced opposition from Saudi Arabia, which refused to support it by restricting the use of its airspace and bases, viewing the move as potentially heightening tensions.

Trump’s recent statements followed another surge in oil prices triggered by Iran’s announcement that further discussions to end the blockade would not proceed unless their conditions were accepted. Maj Gen Mohammad Ali Jafari, a former commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, articulated Iran’s stance, demanding the end of hostilities, lifting of sanctions, release of blocked funds, compensation for war damages, and recognition of Iran’s sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz as prerequisites for any future negotiations.
