US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has called on Cubans seeking political reform to take action, following remarks by President Donald Trump about the potential movement of US warships near Cuba. Rubio’s appeal comes amid heightened public dissatisfaction in Cuba over issues such as corruption, economic hardship, and societal inequality.
Rubio’s statement, made through a social media post, urged those desiring change to capitalize on the current environment, although it stopped short of outlining any specific initiatives. This call to action coincides with Trump’s comments at a Florida rally, where he suggested US naval vessels could pass near Cuba and indicated that Rubio might facilitate negotiations. These remarks have renewed speculation about the US’s intentions towards Cuba.
Cuban officials have strongly criticized these comments, accusing the US of attempting to meddle in its internal affairs. Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernández de Cossío dismissed the notion of collaboration with US intelligence agencies as laughable. The Cuban government views these actions as part of a longstanding pattern of US interference.
Rubio has been a vocal critic of Cuba’s socialist regime, pointing to the country’s economic struggles and its alliances with governments seen as adversarial to the United States. Under the Trump administration, the US has maintained economic sanctions on Cuba while expressing a willingness to resolve disputes through dialogue.
Relations between the US and Cuba remain tense, despite recent diplomatic engagements. The US has voiced concerns over Cuba’s security ties, while Cuba continues to oppose the US economic embargo, which has been in place for decades. The island nation is grappling with an enduring economic and energy crisis, characterized by power shortages, food scarcity, inflation, and a downturn in economic activity. These challenges have led to public protests and increased emigration.
