President Donald Trump publicly accused Iran of playing a double game on Thursday, claiming the country’s negotiators were desperately seeking a deal in private while projecting calm disinterest to the outside world. The accusation, made via Trump’s Truth Social account, added a new dimension of tension to already complex diplomatic efforts. Trump’s language was characteristically blunt, describing Iranian negotiators as “very different and strange.”
Washington’s ceasefire blueprint outlines 15 conditions, including sanctions relief, nuclear programme limits, missile capability restrictions, and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping. The strait is of immense global economic importance, channeling about a fifth of the world’s oil supply. Iran’s refusal to accept these terms has become a central obstacle to ending the conflict.
Iran’s state media has broadcast a rival set of demands: no more strikes on Iranian officials, a pledge of no future war, monetary reparations for destruction caused by the conflict, and recognition of Iranian sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz. These competing frameworks illustrate the vast distance that still separates the two sides. Finding common ground will demand flexibility that neither side has so far demonstrated publicly.
The war’s death toll tells a grim story. Iran has suffered more than 1,500 fatalities, Lebanon close to 1,100, and casualties have also mounted in Israel and neighboring territories. Thirteen American troops have died in the conflict, while millions of civilians in Iran and Lebanon have been displaced by the fighting.
Trump’s Thursday post was more than bluster — it was a deadline wrapped in political language. Sustained military exchanges across the region signal that the window for diplomacy is not unlimited. If Tehran fails to respond with genuine engagement, the consequences Trump alluded to may become very real, very soon.
