The Selma Housing Authority, Metro Digital Group, and a coalition of educational and civic leaders have unveiled plans for the Selma Digital Innovation Center, a transformative initiative aimed at ushering Selma into a more innovative and economically vibrant future. This project will revamp a historic building at 528 Washington Avenue, turning it into a hub for workforce development, entrepreneurship, technology, AI, and digital innovation, targeting students, young adults, entrepreneurs, and the wider community in Selma.

Collins Pettaway Jr., President of Progress Partners for Selma, emphasized the broader impact of the project, stating, “This project represents much more than a building redevelopment. We are creating future opportunity infrastructure for our community. Technology is rapidly changing the workforce, and Selma must position itself to compete and thrive in a modern digital economy.” The initiative is a collaborative effort involving the Mayor’s Office, the Selma Housing Authority, Selma City Schools, Selma University, Wallace Community College Selma, Progress Partners, and Metro Digital Group.

The Selma Digital Innovation Center will feature various modern amenities, including gaming and esports areas, creator and streaming studios, AI and STEM learning labs, workforce development classrooms, media production spaces, and entrepreneurship programming. Metro Digital Group, known for its focus on gaming, STEM, and digital engagement initiatives, will lead the development and ecosystem deployment for the project. Shaon Berry, President of Metro Digital Group, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, noting that it aligns with their mission to build inclusive technology and innovation ecosystems.

The project is of symbolic importance for Selma, according to local leaders, as the city strives to bolster economic development and community revitalization. Selma Councilwoman Lesia James highlighted the significance of such partnerships in creating new opportunities for the youth and residents. John Deamer, Vice President of Progress Partners, added that the initiative aims to expose students and residents to future-facing industries and career pathways, removing traditional ceilings on learning.

Scheduled to begin design, construction planning, and infrastructure coordination in June 2026, the Selma Digital Innovation Center is expected to open in 2027. The project is currently seeking strategic partners, sponsors, and philanthropic collaborators interested in supporting its long-term vision. Roger Blackmon, Director of Technology for Progress Partners, expressed excitement about the advanced technology and dynamic design of the center, which aims to inspire and engage learners of all ages. Progress Partners for Selma, established in November 2025, is dedicated to driving economic development and education in the region.
