The U.S. Department of Energy has granted final funding approval for an energy storage project spearheaded by Advanced Battery Concepts (ABC) in partnership with the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy (GTRLC). This development allows the installation of a 1.15 MW battery energy storage system at GTRLC’s headquarters in Traverse City, Michigan, to proceed.
The project, which integrates with an existing 185 kW solar photovoltaic system, aims to enhance energy resilience by storing solar-generated electricity for use during periods of high demand. It is funded through Congressionally Directed Spending administered by the Department of Energy and utilizes ABC’s innovative GreenSeal® bipolar lead battery technology.
ABC’s GreenSeal® technology is notable for its reduced lead content compared to traditional lead batteries, while maintaining safety and recyclability. This aligns with the company’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions and highlights Michigan’s role in advancing the domestic energy storage supply chain.
The project has moved into the procurement and manufacturing phase, with installation and commissioning scheduled for the second quarter of 2027. The energy storage system will be housed in three commercial-scale BOX-BE™ enclosures, demonstrating the potential for scalable and efficient energy solutions.
