During a brief encounter at the G7 Summit in France, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung urged U.S. President Donald Trump to spearhead efforts to revive discussions with North Korea regarding its nuclear program. This appeal was made as both leaders participated in a group photo session, with South Korea attending the summit as a guest nation. President Lee highlighted Trump’s previous diplomatic engagements with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, suggesting that a similar approach could help restart stalled negotiations.
Amid growing concerns about North Korea’s advancing nuclear and missile capabilities, which have developed in tandem with closer ties between Pyongyang and Moscow, Lee’s request underscores Seoul’s desire to address these regional security issues through dialogue. Although Trump and Kim held several summits during Trump’s first term, these meetings failed to achieve a lasting denuclearization agreement. Nonetheless, Trump’s recent references to his past interactions with Kim have been viewed by some South Korean officials as a sign of possible renewed interest in diplomatic engagement.
In addition to urging Trump to re-engage with North Korea, President Lee met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney during the summit to discuss enhancing defense cooperation and broadening security partnerships. This meeting reflects South Korea’s efforts to expand its diplomatic outreach and strengthen alliances amidst growing regional tensions.
Seoul remains committed to pursuing dialogue with North Korea while simultaneously bolstering defense collaboration with its allies. South Korea’s participation in the G7 Summit and its engagements with world leaders highlight its proactive stance in addressing security challenges in the region.
