President Donald Trump has unveiled plans for a monumental $15 billion steel plant in eastern Iowa, set to become the largest facility of its kind in U.S. history. This ambitious project will be spearheaded by Mesabi Metallics, a steel company owned by the India-based Essar Group, with an estimated production start date in 2030.
The plant will utilize iron ore sourced from Mesabi Metallics’ mine in Minnesota to produce high-quality steel for the domestic market. It is projected to create up to 6,000 construction jobs and nearly 2,000 additional roles in manufacturing and mining, significantly boosting local employment.
Federal backing will play a crucial role in the project, with the U.S. Export-Import Bank providing up to $10 billion in financing. Rewant Ruia, the company chairman, emphasized that while most critical materials will be sourced domestically, certain specialized materials may need to be imported.
Trump attributed this investment to his administration’s trade policies, particularly tariffs on imported goods, which he claims have encouraged companies to invest in domestic manufacturing. The announcement comes amid a political backdrop, as Iowa gears up for the 2026 Senate election, making industrial investment and job creation pivotal issues in the state.
